How do I use the Runes?
Most rune powers are automatic. When your player touches, or "picks up" a rune, the powers of that rune are immediately given to you. There are exceptions to this rule; some runes will modify your weapons with enhanced powers. The runes that let you fly or turn into a monster give you these powers automatically. A good portion of the runes that give you an extra weapon will use the Axe to trigger this weapon. Others, such as the Construction Worker actually modify your existing weapons. If your ever totally stuck, don't worry, SCTF has an on-line help system. Just pick-up a rune and type impulse 130 for rune help.

For more information on runes, visit the SCTF Runes section of this web site.

What is the impulse for the Grapple Hook?
Impulse 22  -or-
Impulse 39

To bind a key, bring down your Quake Console window, and type: bind <key> "impulse 22"
EXAMPLE:   bind f "impulse 22"

For more information on impulse commands, visit the Impulse Commands section of this web site.

How can I run my own server?
In the SCTF Files section, you should find enough software to run your own server. Currently we only have an installation utility for Windows 95/98/NT systems. The installation file needs a version of Quake that has clean maps. In other words, your maps cannot be altered in any way. If you're unsure of their status, reinstall Quake. If your maps are changed, or the Water Vis patch is applied, this will cause errors with the BSP utility and the maps will not be created properly.
The Setup Utility performs these steps for you:

Step 1) Unpack your Quake pak files
Step 2) Create a SCTF folder to store the new maps.
Step 3) Run BSP using the SCTF .ent files to set the locations of the flags and SCTF items.
Step 4) Copy the correct progs.dat file into the SCTF folder.
Step 5) Repack the .pak files - not mandatory, but this step saves space.
Step 6) Copy the documentation, Dedicated Server executable, and configuration files.
Step 7) Creates shortcuts in your Start menu for SCTF.
Step 8) Removes any unnecessary files the program created.

Your server is now ready to run, all you need to do is click the dedicated.bat file to start it.

How can I upgrade my server?
Server upgrades are a simple matter of switching your progs.dat file with a new version. You do not need to rebuild maps, or any other files. For administrators who plan to upgrade frequently, it is suggested that you unpak your pak0.pak file and remove the progs.dat from this file. Then simply keep the new progs.dat file in the sctf directory.

For file updates, visit the Files Section of this web site.

What is the impulse to toss a rune?
Impulse 71

For more information on impulse commands, visit the Impulse Commands section of this web site.

How do I get the other weapons?
Other weapons require special ammo types. Some require Cells and Shells to fire one round. Powerful weapons require more ammo. Weapons like the Sniper rifle require 7 rockets and 7 shells to file one projectile. The Lavagun requires 10 rockets. And so on... Once you have enough ammunition, simply press your number keys, 2 - 9 three times each for each new weapon.

Where can I get the water Vis program?
If you are above water on a servers that does not have their maps patched you will not receive the player data as they swim below the surface. It is assumed you can't see them. Only a patched server will show you a player through the liquid surface. The Water Vis program on this web site only works with GL Quake. There is a Water Hack web site just for the non-GL Quake versions of Quake. It will remove all surfaces of your liquids, allowing you to see into them. But if you must, last time I looked, the web site was still up at: http://www.primenet.com/~splat/waterhack.html

Is SCTF just for California ISP's?!
No! In fact, there are three servers outside California at time of this writing. One in the UK, Switzerland, Chechya, and Arizona. I would love to have some servers in Canada or Eastern North America.

If you would like to setup a server, you are welcome to use our installation utility located in the SCTF Files section of this web site. I strongly recomend you install this on a clean version of Quake.

How do you fly?
A player can fly if they have a rune that grants them this power. All they have to do is look up and walk forward! Hovering in mid-air is also possible with most flying runes. Others may slowly sink back to the ground.

How can I turn into a monster?
All runes that have a monster effect will automatically change you into a monster. Some runes actually curse a player, and then they transform into monsters once cursed!

How many runes can the server spawn?
There are limits to how many entities one can spawn. Players take a lot of memory and processor power to keep track of, even for the server. We typically spawn 10 runes on out 16-player server. If you spawn a large number and didn't stop by Quake Engine limits, I would be interested in that number.

May I have administrative privileges to your server?
Heh, I get asked this question frequently and the answer is no! I even restrict admin privs to 5 members in my clan. Just the few players who really need it and I can trust not to abuse it, get admin.

Ever think about doing this for QuakeWorld?
Yes indeed! Despite my personal feelings for QuakeWorld, I am trying to convert SCTF into this platform. Progress has been a little slow due to lack of interest and lack of players for beta testing. But the foundation has already begun. There are several things that will be missing in QuakeWorld. I.E., players transforming into monsters (cursed players will still transform into monsters), flying, and other effects that are just not possible due to limitations in QW's prediction characteristics.

What is this M4d Sk1llz power-up I keep hearing about?
M4d Sk1llz (or Mad Skills for those who are not hackers) is a power balancing system to help out the losing team. If your server is running frequently for entertainment, this would help even the games by granting the losing team extra power.
M4d Sk1llz as found in Version 7.30e description:
o  Disabled by default in v7.27 and above

Version 7.27+ requirements to obtain this power-up are:
o  Power-up not available until 2 minutes into a match.
o  Player must be on the losing team.
o  Losing team must be behind a minimum of 50 points.
o  Player must be killed 4+ times to be considered a candidate.
o  Only 1 player may have this power at a time.
o  Providing all conditions are met, this power is still based on chance of:
chance = (kills / team size)  * (score delta / fraglimit)

The current power of this feature is:

o  Shot pellet is valued at 100 points of damage per pellet.
o  Effective with either shotgun or super shotgun.
o  Player can only shoot the weapon 3 times, or score 2 kills. Then the power is gone.
o  Power is gone after 60 seconds no matter what.

I have some good ideas, where should I submit them?
Send all suggestions to neophyte@sctf.net

How can I find the Easter Eggs in SCTF?
I won't give all the secrets away! But most of the Easter Eggs in SCTF require you to drop your runes before you can find them. Most all are done with firing a weapon or something with it's projectile.

Are there secret exits on the Start Map to Threewave CTF Levels?
Yes there are. These are enabled in current versions, and require the client to have the Threewave maps.

For SCTF related files, visit the Files Section of this web site.

Where can I get the Threewave CTF Levels?
Threewave Maps can be found in the SCTF Files section, among other numerous places.
They are not required to play SCTF in its default setting. You may also play SCTF using the Threewave Sounds and Player Skins. To enable this, add 512 to your servers teamplay value in autoexec.cfg

For SCTF related files, visit the Files Section of this web site.

Do you have any other Mod's?
Yes!
At this time, none are as complete as SCTF, but we do have a version of SCTF in one condition or another for QuakeWorld and Quake2. We also are working on an admin patch for Kingpin that will offer the Kingpin server admin a Lithium II degree of control.
